The Aims of Counselling

By talking a situation through with me, perhaps looking at the situation differently and becoming aware of your options, you will more easily be able to come to terms with difficult feelings. You will be able to face your own personal challenges with more self-knowledge and optimism and perhaps better-help those who are looking to you for support.

Your past experiences can greatly influence the way you react when faced with situations that bring bad feelings to the surface. It can be helpful to to examine your past history in order to better understand your reactions to life's difficult challenges. It is possible to change your responses and then to cope better. Psychotherapy can be a good way to uncover the roots of why you think and feel in a particular way.

When our lives feel unsatisfactory, when problems overwhelm us, when no one seems to listen or care, then the role of the counselor offers a warm, supportive and accepting presence. In client-centred therapy we work as equals, working to discover or uncover the heart of your problem and to identify what needs to be changed, to clarify the situation and to give you hope for the future.

The first step is to acknowledge that there is a problem. The second step is to identify in what way you would like it to be resolved.
